Following in the footsteps of her great-grandmother and grandfather, Cara Mitchell was born with an innate ability to identify beauty and create art. A San Antonio native drawn to the natural beauty surrounding her, Cara originally focused on working with Texas wildflowers as the subject of her artwork. As her talents evolved, her love of wildflowers grew into an appreciation of all flowers with the bright colors and complexity of petals becoming her favorite subject of composition.

Cara often uses an abstracted realism style in her paintings, presenting the object through a magnified perspective. Her favorite medium is oil paint, as the prolonged drying period allows her to manipulate her work until she achieves the desired effect for each painting.

Along with oil painting, Cara has always had a love and passion for drawing. One of her favorite subjects to draw is the human figure. She finds that she can better capture movement and posture with drawing due to her ability to move quickly across the paper as opposed to the precision needed when handling a brush.

Cara currently resides in Houston, Texas, with her husband and their two dogs. She received her Bachelor of Fine Art degree from Baylor University in December 2011, with a concentration in painting. She has studied under renowned artists such as Karl Umlauf, painting professor and multi-media artist at Baylor University; Irena Taylor, established artist and teacher of San Antonio; Shawn Bridges, reputable painter of San Antonio; and Gail Smith, instructional artist of Dallas, Texas. She has also participated in summer intensive studies in Drawing and Design at Parsons The New School in New York City.

Cara has participated in a number of shows over the course of her career. She has won several awards for her work in judged competitions including the San Antonio Livestock Exposition Western Art Contest and Exhibit top 25 placing entry, the Baylor University Development Office’s Art Inspired by a Thankful Soul for Judge’s Choice Award and All University Sing for Audience Favorite Backdrop Award. She also contributed to the Mulberry School Mural Art Project in San Antonio within the 40,000 square foot building of Trinity Baptist Church.
